The Mix: Types Of Concrete Mixers For The Perfect Foundation

The performance of concrete is the core factor of every construction project. Concrete is determined by its micro-structure. As a vital building material widely used in urban developments across the world, it is important to familiarize ourselves with the versatile nature of the process. Traditional practices of concrete mixes involved intensive loads of manual labor with little to no precision. With modern day practices, over the years the industry adopted the use of advanced mechanical concrete mixers.


This increased accuracy and precision within the composition making it more appropriate for large-scale applications. However, it is important to keep in mind, the different projects have different requirements, and before investing in the most appropriate equipment it is useful to consider several factors such as duration of project, climate conditions, the location of construction site, amount of concrete needed and so on. Depending on the conditions of the project, it is rewarding to invest in either one of the two main types of concrete mixers i.e,: Batch mixers or continuous mixers. 



Types of Concrete Mixers:


Batch Mixers

Batch Mixers are mainly involved in producing concrete in consequential batches depending on the requirements. Batch mixers are accompanied by a rotating axis that helps in generating the concrete mix. These rotating axis are either horizontal or vertical in nature.


Drum Mixer

h mixer that consists of a horizontal axis and blades in the centre of the machine. These blades are responsible to lift the materials and produce the desired composition in the mix as the drum rotates. Drum Mixers essential consist of two categories: Tilting and Non-tilting.


Tilting drum

Tilting drum mixers are generally used in projects that require preparing concrete with large aggregates and low workability. This type of concrete mixes is generally preferable for producing small batches. Tilting drum mixers are inclined at either horizontal or vertical positions, requiring more energy expenditure in order to lift and move material along the length of the mixer’s diameter.


Reversing drum

Reversing drum mixers although quite similar to non-tilting mixers, are different for one reason: the direction and purpose of rotation is entirely different from the latter. In reversing mixers, the equipment rotates in one direction for the purpose of creating the mix, whereas, it utilizes two different sets of blades and rotates in the other direction for the purpose of discharging. However, unlike non-tilting mixers, the same opening is used for adding materials and discharging the mixes. These type of mixers are generally used for producing concrete mixes in single batches.


Non-Tilting drum

Non-tilting mixers, function exactly like the name suggest, meaning their direction of rotation is fixed. The materials are mixed at one end and discharged at the other. These types of mixers, similar to the one above, are also used to produce mixes in single batches.


Pan Mixer

The pan mixer resembles that of a large pan, which utilizes clockwise rotations in order to mix the material, and anti-clockwise rotations to discharge the material. This industrial equipment is widely used in building constructions, roads and bridge projects.


Continuous Mixers

Apart from batch mixers, the second in the category of concrete mixers are: continuous mixers. Continuous mixers are an ideal asset to projects that require short working time, long unloading time and sites that are not suitable for ready-mix. These type of mixers, as the name suggest, involve being continuously fed into the mixer, while discharge is being produced simultaneously from the other end.

Mixing is complicated part of every project, that is mainly affected by the type of mixer involves and the cycle implemented. Before embarking on the procedure, it is beneficial to consider the homogeneity of the concrete produced, the type of mixer that would be most suitable and the right concrete composition to utilize.
